What is Zainium OS

An enterprise-grade, independent operating system built from scratch, with a base that cannot break.

Zainium OS is an enterprise-grade, independent operating system by Zainium Dynamics, built from scratch. It is not based on any other distribution: every package of the base is built from source by Zainium's own recipes and CI, on the Linux kernel and the musl C library. It runs on x86_64 and is licensed under GPL-3.0.

It is designed for systems that must not break: the base (syshub) cannot be damaged by installing software, by a failed update or by a mistake, upgrades are atomic and can be rolled back, and the package manager resolves every dependency before it changes anything.

What makes it different

  • No /usr, /etc, /bin or /lib at the root. The whole operating system lives under /overlayer, in layers with one owner each. The layout is published as an open standard, the Dualayer Hierarchy Standard.
  • A base that never breaks. The base (syshub) and the software you install (zexlib) are kept apart on disk and joined with OverlayFS at boot. Nothing you install is written into the base, and if anything goes wrong the base boots on its own.
  • Atomic upgrades. Base upgrades are staged while you work and applied at the next boot, before anything uses the base. The last upgrade can be rolled back.
  • musl and glibc side by side. The base is built on musl. glibc installs into its own directory for prebuilt software, without touching the base.
  • No dependency hell. zex resolves every package and every shared library before it installs anything, takes missing libraries from the repository that has that exact version, and never leaves a half-installed package. It installs Zainium's own signed packages and can take packages from Void, Alpine and Chimera Linux.
  • Software from other systems just works. sys_resolver maps /usr, /etc and /bin paths and missing loaders to Zainium's, at run time.
  • Root that protects the system (how it works). elevate replaces sudo and refuses to modify the base even as root, and fs-verity seals every base file so the kernel refuses to rewrite it — for root too.
  • Rolling release. No version numbers: install once and stay current.

Status

Ali Zain started Zainium OS on 11 January 2026, and it is in active development. Not every package from Void, Alpine or Chimera works after adaptation, and programs that hard-code /usr paths and are statically linked or setuid are not covered by path resolution. See the FAQ.
